We are excited to announce Dr. Ana C. Sanchez-Birkhead has joined the Latina Researchers Network’s Leadership Team as the Director of Communications and Outreach. Dr. Sanchez-Birkhead has extensive experience in promoting the needs of under-represented communities and social justice advocacy.
Dr. Ana C. Sanchez-Birkhead was born in Costa Rica and raised in Northern California. She received her PhD from the University of California, San Francisco. She is a nationally certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and an Associate Professor at the University of Utah. Dr. Sanchez-Birkhead is a National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Scholar. She has served as a nurse and clinician for 20 years caring primarily for Hispanic/Latino families. She is involved in many community efforts that aim at eliminating health disparities and advocating for social justice. Her area of research focuses on the socio-cultural and psychosocial impact of health disparities and burden of disease (i.e. cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease) among immigrant Hispanic families. She has won several awards and has conducted and co-authored several research studies. She is currently completing data collection on a Community-Based Participatory mixed methods study examining the lived experiences of immigrant Hispanic breast cancer survivors and their families. Dr. Sanchez-Birkhead is a mother, wife, and “young” grandmother and is the first in her family to earn a PhD. She enjoys hiking, swimming, dancing, reading, and mentoring young people who have a desire to go to college.
Congratulations Dr. Sanchez-Birkhead and welcome to an amazing community of scholars, researchers, social justice advocates and aspiring investigators!
